A Prescription for Summer Hair Care
We know the sun’s rays can be harmful to our skin, that’s why we all wear sunscreen (you are using a moisturizer and/or makeup with sunscreen, aren’t you?). What you might not have known is that the sun can also damage your hair.
WebMD reports that fried hair isn’t just a figure of speech. They quote Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, a New York dermatologist, who said that the ultraviolet rays of the sun actually “cook the hair shaft.”
If you color your hair, you may have noticed the effects of the sun in the form of fading or bleaching. But WebMD says, “Even hair that isn’t colored will suffer from sun-induced stress. Those UV rays dry out hair and rough up the normally smooth cuticle, or outer layer, of the hair shaft.” And the drier your hair is, the more likely it is to frizz during the summer months.
As WebMD reports, “parched hair soaks up the extra humidity in the air, causing the shaft to swell and leading to breaks in the cuticle. Hair puffs up and goes every which way but smooth.”
To avoid damage from UV rays, cut down on frizz and keep your hair looking healthy and gorgeous this summer, look for hair care products that contain UV filters. A cute hat can offer protection for your hair – and your skin (and they’re great to have on hand for those days when no amount of effort or product will tame your frizz).
To ensure you look your best at every summer barbecue, picnic and party, you should also start the season with a trim – or a new, easy-to-care for style from the experts at Illusion Unlimited Salons, consistently rated among the top hair salons in Cleveland, Ohio, and vicinity.
