WebMD reports that swimming can damage your hair. So, before you hit the pool or head off to the beach this summer, take heed!

“Take a plunge in a pool and while you’re doing the breaststroke, chlorine is stripping your hair of its natural protective oils,” WebMD says. “If you’re a blonde, you may find your locks taking on an unflattering greenish cast. That’s caused by the copper molecules and other pool chemicals that bind to the protein in the hair shaft.”

A day at the beach is no picnic for your hair, either. “A dip in the ocean stresses hair in another way,” WebMD reports. Apparently, the salt in seawater depletes the moisture in our hair and skin. The result is dry hair and skin.

In addition to using haircare products with UV filters to protect from sun damage, the experts at WebMD have a few tips to help your hair weather the long days of summer:

Thoroughly soak hair before hitting the pool or the waves. “If your hair is drenched with clean water or leave-in conditioner, it won’t absorb as much saltwater or pool chemicals,” the experts point out. “It’s also a good idea to try to rinse your hair after a swim. If there isn’t a shower nearby, keep a spray bottle filled with fresh water.”

They also suggest a season switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. “You may be washing your hair more frequently to deal with summer’s sweat and grime,” they reason.

“At least once or twice a week, give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons,” they add. Makes sense – it’s hot enough outside!
